James Gunn’s “Superman,” hitting theaters today, reintroduces the Man of Steel as a beacon of hope in a cynical world. Unlike Gunn’s snarky “Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” this film embraces optimism, presenting a Superman who sees beauty in everyone, as per the director’s vision. “He’s a good-natured guy who wants to be kind,” Gunn said.
David Corenswet’s vulnerable Superman, three years into his heroic journey, grapples with doing good in a world where Lex Luthor questions his motives. The film explores his flaws, ideals, and intimate relationship with Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, while delivering a grander narrative than past iterations. Journalism takes center stage, with the Daily Planet’s team, including Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and Perry White (Wendell Pierce), fighting injustice alongside Superman, Krypto, and the “Justice Gang”—featuring Hawk Girl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion).
Actors praise the film’s timely message. Merced found hope amid troubling news, while Gathegi called it a “meditation on the human spirit.” A cameo by Will Reeve, son of Christopher Reeve, ties the film to Superman’s enduring legacy of inspiration.
