Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee, a towering figure in the global tech industry, passed away today at 63 after suffering a heart attack. The company confirmed that Han, who led its Device Experience (DX) division, died at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul while receiving treatment following a cardiac arrest over the weekend.
Born in 1962, Han joined Samsung in 1988, rising through the ranks with a focus on visual display technology. His leadership cemented Samsung’s position as the world’s top TV brand for 19 consecutive years, earning him the nickname "Mr. Rhinoceros" for his relentless drive.
Promoted to vice chairman in 2021, he oversaw the company’s TV, home appliance, and smartphone businesses, steering them through a challenging tech landscape.
Han’s death comes at a pivotal time for Samsung, which has faced declining stock performance and competition in AI and semiconductor markets. Just last week, he apologized to shareholders for the company’s struggles, vowing to restore its edge.
His final days were marked by a packed schedule, including his daughter’s wedding and a business trip to China.
Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong, currently in China, expressed condolences, though he cannot return immediately. Co-CEO Jun Young-hyun will now lead alone, tasked with navigating Samsung’s future.
Han’s funeral is set for Thursday at Samsung Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a void in the industry he shaped.
