In a daring midnight operation, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued approximately 40 devotees stranded in Uttarakhand’s Sonprayag landslide zone while returning from the sacred Kedarnath Dham.
The pilgrims were trapped after a sudden landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, blocked the route with debris around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, halting all movement along the critical Kedarnath Yatra path. The landslide struck near Sonprayag, a key transit point for pilgrims, in the Munkhtiya area, known for its vulnerability to such disasters.
Despite challenging conditions, including darkness and relentless rain, SDRF teams swiftly mobilized, navigating treacherous debris to safely evacuate all 40 pilgrims. Video footage shared by the SDRF showcased their courageous efforts, highlighting the high-risk operation’s success with no reported casualties.

The Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily halted as a precaution, with authorities deploying JCB machines to clear the blocked route. The Badrinath National Highway also faced disruptions due to a separate landslide near Umtta, underscoring the widespread impact of heavy rains across Uttarakhand.
The district administration, along with SDRF and NDRF teams, remains on high alert, urging pilgrims to avoid risky areas and adhere to safety advisories during the ongoing monsoon season.
