A major fire broke out at a hardware shop and its adjoining godown in Akhnoor on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to property and triggering panic among residents and shopkeepers in the busy market area.According to eyewitnesses, the fire erupted suddenly inside the shop and spread rapidly within minutes. The premises were reportedly stocked with highly inflammable materials, including paint, chemicals, and various hardware items, which intensified the blaze.

The fire quickly escalated, engulfing the entire structure and generating thick clouds of black smoke that were visible from several kilometres away, creating alarm across the locality.As the fire intensified, local residents and nearby shopkeepers rushed to alert authorities. Fire and emergency services soon pressed multiple fire tenders into service to control the situation. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the combustible nature of the materials stored inside the shop and godown.

Despite the intensity of the flames, teams worked continuously for several hours to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining commercial establishments in the densely populated market area.Officials at the scene said that containment was the top priority, given the risk of the fire spreading rapidly through closely packed shops. A fire department official noted that continuous efforts were made to create firebreaks and restrict the spread of flames to nearby properties.

Police personnel and civil administration officials also reached the spot shortly after the incident was reported, coordinating safety measures and assisting in crowd control.The incident caused widespread disruption in Akhnoor’s main market area. Authorities were forced to block the road outside the affected shop from both sides to allow uninterrupted movement of fire tenders and emergency vehicles.

This led to temporary traffic congestion and affected normal movement in the surrounding areas for several hours until the situation was brought under control.Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far. However, officials confirmed that the fire completely destroyed the shop’s inventory, including stored goods, furniture, fixtures, and billing records.

Preliminary estimates suggest losses running into several lakhs of rupees, although a detailed assessment is yet to be conducted by the concerned authorities.The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. While a short circuit is being considered a possible trigger, officials have stated that all angles are being examined to determine the precise reason behind the incident.

A senior officer at the site confirmed that a formal probe has been initiated and that a technical team will also assess structural damage to evaluate the safety of the building before any further use is permitted.Authorities are expected to compile a comprehensive report after the investigation, which will include findings on the origin of the fire, response time of emergency services, and the extent of losses incurred. In the meantime, shopkeepers in the vicinity have been advised to remain cautious as a preventive measure while restoration and safety checks continue in the area.
