Mahindra & Mahindra, a leading Indian automaker, is actively seeking a land parcel for a new greenfield manufacturing plant to significantly enhance its production capacity for both domestic and export markets, according to Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the company’s Auto Division. The Mumbai-based firm, known for its dominance in the SUV segment, aims to support its recently unveiled NU IQ platform—a modular, multi-energy architecture designed for a new range of SUVs, with the first rollout expected in 2027. This platform targets untapped market segments in India and globally, complementing Mahindra’s existing product pipeline.
Gollagunta revealed plans to increase production capacity at the Chakan plant by 240,000 units annually, with the new facility addressing additional demand. The company has expressed interest in acquiring 350 acres in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, where it already operates manufacturing units alongside its Nashik plant. “We are in the process of finding sites for a greenfield additional capacity,” Gollagunta told PTI, noting that land acquisition timelines remain uncertain due to inherent complexities.
In parallel, Mahindra is bolstering its service network to accommodate its growing vehicle parc, which is expanding by 10–15% annually. The company plans to add 150–200 service outlets each year, increasing its current network of approximately 1,100 outlets. This expansion, targeting both urban and rural areas, aims to enhance customer experience and meet evolving demands. “Service network expansion is of equal importance, if not more,” Gollagunta emphasized, highlighting efforts to improve service capacity at existing sites.

Mahindra’s urban customer base has grown significantly, prompting focused efforts to strengthen service infrastructure in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, while continuing to cater to semi-urban and rural regions where the brand has deep roots. The company’s market share in the SUV segment has surged from 11% to 27%, and Gollagunta projects a 15–20% year-on-year volume growth in 2025, fueled by a robust monsoon and the upcoming festive season.
With ambitions to achieve a 1 million-unit production capacity for electric vehicles (EVs) by 2027, Mahindra’s strategic initiatives underscore its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, positioning it as a formidable player in the global automotive industry.
