L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to establish a 300 kilo tonne per annum (KTPA) green ammonia project at Kandla, Gujarat. Announced on Wednesday, the initiative aims to supply zero-emission fuel for the maritime sector, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing global shipping.
The project will be developed on a land parcel acquired by L&T in Kandla last year, aligning with LTEG’s strategic vision to expand its presence across the green energy value chain. Under the agreement, LTEG and ITOCHU will collaborate to build and commercialize the green ammonia facility, with ITOCHU planning to offtake the product for bunkering applications in Singapore, a key international shipping hub. “With this collaboration, Kandla will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore,” said Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President of ITOCHU Corporation.
The partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability. “The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus,” stated Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President, L&T. LTEG, backed by L&T’s $30 billion enterprise, leverages advanced technology, strategic partnerships, and dedicated research to deliver innovative solutions in the green hydrogen and ammonia space.
