Former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has publicly apologised on X for a controversial video in which he and fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya referred to themselves as the "biggest fugitives of India" during a birthday celebration in London. The clip, initially shared by Modi on Instagram with a celebratory caption, quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism for appearing to mock Indian authorities.
In the video, filmed at Modi's Belgrave Square residence during Mallya's 70th birthday party, Modi introduced the pair as India's top fugitives while Mallya laughed. Modi later stated that the remark was misconstrued and never intended to offend, expressing deep regret if sentiments were hurt, particularly those of the Indian Government, for which he claimed the highest respect.
Social media erupted with condemnation, with users accusing the duo of openly ridiculing the nation's legal system. Many highlighted the incident as evidence of weak enforcement against economic offenders who flee abroad, arguing that such displays undermine public trust in governmental resolve to pursue justice.

The Ministry of External Affairs responded by reaffirming commitment to extraditing fugitives, noting ongoing legal processes with relevant countries. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised that these cases involve complex multilayered procedures, but efforts continue to ensure their return to face Indian law.
Mallya, who fled in 2016 amid fraud and money laundering charges related to Kingfisher Airlines' defaulted loans, and Modi, who left in 2010 facing allegations of financial irregularities during his IPL tenure, remain outside India. The incident has renewed scrutiny on extradition delays involving high-profile economic offenders.
