A 17-year-old aspiring footballer was allegedly hacked to death by a group of men in Baruipur on the outskirts of Kolkata, days after he received a medal for an impressive performance in a football match. The victim, identified as Prosenjit Biswas, came from a modest background and dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. His family said he had no known personal enmity with anyone and claimed that a recent dispute connected to football may have led to the attack.
According to reports, Prosenjit was attacked with sharp weapons and suffered fatal injuries, including a wound to his throat. His cousin, Animesh Shil, described him as a talented player whose lifelong ambition was to build a career in football. Shil said Prosenjit had recently won a medal following an excellent performance in a match and alleged that resentment linked to his sporting success may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding his death.
A 16-year-old friend who was with Prosenjit at the time of the incident said he had asked the teenager to accompany him to help resolve an earlier dispute. The friend claimed he had been verbally abused by a group of men a few days earlier and wanted to settle the matter. According to his account, an argument broke out when they met the group, which allegedly consisted of five people, and the confrontation quickly turned violent.

The friend alleged that one of the men suddenly produced a sharp weapon and attacked Prosenjit repeatedly. He said he suffered an injury to his hand while attempting to save the teenager. Police have reportedly arrested men in connection with the killing, while investigators are examining the sequence of events and the possible motive behind the attack. The witness's account suggests Prosenjit had accompanied his friend to help resolve the dispute rather than because of a direct conflict of his own.
Prosenjit's brother, Abhishek Biswas, also said the teenager did not have a direct dispute with anyone. He acknowledged that there had been a scuffle connected to a football match a few days earlier but said there was no other known hostility involving his brother. According to the family, Prosenjit received a call from a friend on Monday afternoon, after which an argument occurred and men from the nearby Pal Para locality allegedly assaulted him with a sharp weapon.
The killing has left Prosenjit's family mourning the loss of a teenager they believed had the talent and ambition to pursue football professionally. Investigators are expected to examine witness statements, the earlier disputes and the events leading up to the fatal confrontation to establish the exact motive. The case has drawn attention to the circumstances in which a young footballer's sporting ambitions were abruptly ended by a violent attack.
