On International Day of Democracy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of undermining India’s democratic framework through a controversial legislative proposal. Labeling it a “Trojan Horse,” Kharge warned that the BJP’s 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill could empower the central government to destabilize elected state governments under the guise of anti-corruption measures.
In a fiery post on X, Kharge alleged that the BJP, in collusion with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has spent the last 11 years systematically eroding India’s hard-won democratic institutions. “The BJP is coming for the voter directly. Electoral manipulation, dressed up as ‘reform,’ is being used to snatch the all-important Right to Vote enshrined in our Constitution!” he stated. He pointed to alleged voter disenfranchisement in Bihar through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the “vote chori” scandal exposed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as evidence of the BJP’s tactics to compromise electoral integrity.
The heart of Kharge’s critique lies in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, introduced last month by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha alongside the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025. These bills propose that if a prime minister, Union minister, or chief minister is arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on charges carrying a minimum five-year sentence, they would automatically lose their position on the 31st day. Kharge argued that this provision could allow the BJP-controlled central government to target opposition-led state governments by leveraging agencies like the CBI or ED, which he claims are already under the BJP’s influence.

“Why bother with elections when you can legally bulldoze elected Chief Ministers within 30 days?” Kharge questioned, calling the bills a direct assault on federalism and democracy. The proposal sparked fierce opposition in Parliament, with MPs tearing up copies of the draft law in protest. The bills have since been referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further scrutiny.
Kharge urged citizens to recommit to protecting India’s constitutional institutions from what he described as the “clutches of RSS-BJP.” As the debate over the bills intensifies, the controversy underscores growing concerns about the state of democratic governance in India.
