Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has said that artificial intelligence (AI) will not eliminate the importance of technical skills but will instead allow people with strong STEM backgrounds to use technology more effectively. Speaking at a London business conference, Hassabis said graduates with knowledge of computer science and engineering fundamentals would be better positioned to benefit from the rapid growth of AI tools.
Hassabis addressed concerns among young technology professionals and students who fear that AI automation could reduce opportunities in software development and problem-solving roles. He said that while AI will transform the way programming is performed, a strong understanding of technical concepts will remain essential for building and managing complex systems.
According to Hassabis, software engineering knowledge will help people use AI tools at a much higher level. He explained that future programming may become more like a higher-level interaction with AI systems, but professionals will still need to understand software architecture, engineering principles and technical decision-making.

The DeepMind chief executive said individuals with deep technical expertise would be able to use AI tools far more effectively than those without a strong foundation in technology. He described AI as a tool that can expand human capabilities rather than simply replace engineers, allowing skilled professionals to improve productivity and take on more advanced challenges.
Hassabis, who was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, also highlighted the growing importance of subjects beyond science and technology. He said fields such as philosophy, economics and other areas of the humanities will become increasingly important as societies adapt to the impact of advanced AI systems.
The comments come as businesses, educational institutions and governments continue debating the future role of AI in the workforce. While automation is expected to reshape many industries, experts including Hassabis argue that combining technical knowledge with broader social and ethical understanding will be crucial for effectively developing and using future AI technologies.
