Ford Motor Company has announced a significant Rs 3,250 crore investment to revive its Maraimalai Nagar plant near Chennai, marking a strategic recommitment to India’s automotive manufacturing sector. The plant, largely idle since Ford’s exit from vehicle production in 2021, will now be retooled to produce next-generation engines exclusively for export markets. Production is expected to begin in 2029, with a planned annual capacity of 235,000 engines, creating more than 600 direct jobs alongside numerous indirect roles.
This move reverses Ford’s previous exit from India’s vehicle market driven by sustained financial losses and low domestic demand. Instead of manufacturing cars for local sales, Ford aims to strengthen its global supply chain by leveraging India’s manufacturing expertise and cost advantages. According to Ford’s International Markets Group President Jeff Marentic, the Chennai facility will play a key role in the company’s global manufacturing footprint as part of its Ford+ plan.
The initiative was formalized in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed this week with the Tamil Nadu government, building on a letter of intent from September 2024. Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa welcomed the investment, emphasizing the state’s skilled workforce and robust industrial ecosystem that make it a hub for next-generation automotive technologies. He noted that the revival of the Ford plant will energize the state’s automotive sector and position Tamil Nadu at the forefront of automotive innovation.

Ford did not disclose detailed technical specifications of the engines or export destinations, promising to share further information closer to production. The project fits into broader geopolitical and economic dynamics as global automakers balance manufacturing efficiency with rising protectionist pressures, such as the Trump administration’s push for domestic US production. Ford’s decision signals confidence in India’s strategic manufacturing capabilities and underscores its evolving global strategy.
With production slated for 2029, the revived Chennai plant aims to reaffirm India’s importance as a manufacturing and export hub while diversifying Ford’s international market presence. This investment could also catalyze further industry growth and signal renewed interest by legacy automakers in India's expanding automotive sector.
