A massive fire broke out on Tuesday at Power Plant-2 (PBS-2) of the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Durg district, Chhattisgarh, after an explosion in the 25 MW turbine section, officials said. Thick black smoke engulfed the area, and flames reportedly rose nearly 10 feet high, creating panic among workers inside the plant.
According to sources, five people sustained injuries in the incident, including two regular employees and three contract workers. One employee suffered a leg fracture, while the others received minor injuries. All injured personnel were provided immediate medical attention and are reported to be stable.
Workers present at the site managed to escape through a rear exit, preventing a larger tragedy, officials said. The fire department responded swiftly, dispatching more than six fire tenders, while senior officials of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), which operates the plant, rushed to the scene. The blaze has now been fully extinguished, though the exact extent of damage is still being assessed.

Plant authorities said that preventive measures would be strengthened to avoid similar mishaps in the future.
A plant management source lauded the quick response of the fire services and the presence of mind shown by workers. “We are thankful that the situation was brought under control without major casualties. Safety of employees remains our top priority,” the source added.
Bhilai Steel Plant, one of SAIL’s flagship facilities, has witnessed similar accidents in the past, raising ongoing concerns about industrial safety. Authorities have assured that normal operations will be restored after necessary repairs and safety audits, with state government and management closely monitoring the situation to ensure minimal disruption to production.
