The first half of the Budget session of Parliament concluded on Friday, with attention now shifting to March 9 when a proposed no-confidence motion and several key legislative debates are expected to dominate proceedings. The adjournment marks the customary recess period during which parliamentary standing committees examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries.
The session began with the President’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses, followed by the presentation of the Union Budget for the upcoming financial year. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined the government’s fiscal priorities, including capital expenditure, welfare allocations and measures aimed at sustaining economic growth amid global uncertainties. Discussions on the Motion of Thanks and the general Budget debate saw sharp exchanges between the Treasury benches and the Opposition.
Opposition parties have indicated that they intend to move a no-confidence motion when Parliament reconvenes, seeking to raise issues related to governance, economic management and law and order. While the numerical strength in the Lok Sabha is seen as favouring the ruling coalition, the motion is expected to trigger extensive debate and political messaging ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Several important bills are also slated for consideration in the second half of the session. These include legislation related to financial sector reforms, infrastructure development and social welfare measures. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has stated that the government is open to constructive discussion but urged members to ensure smooth functioning of both Houses.
The second phase of the Budget session is likely to be politically charged, with the no-confidence motion providing the Opposition a platform to articulate its critique and the government an opportunity to defend its record. Observers note that while such motions rarely alter the balance of power, they often shape the broader political narrative and set the tone for the months ahead.
