The Election Commission has transferred five senior officials in Assam ahead of the upcoming elections, a move that has triggered political reactions, with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) announcing plans to contest 33 seats in the state.
According to officials, the transfers are part of routine administrative measures aimed at ensuring a free and fair electoral process. The reshuffle involves key bureaucrats holding positions in districts considered sensitive from an election management perspective. The Election Commission has not indicated any irregularities but maintained that such changes are standard practice during poll season.
The decision, however, drew criticism from the JMM, which questioned the timing of the transfers. Party leaders alleged that frequent reshuffling of officials could impact administrative continuity on the ground. Despite its concerns, the party confirmed that it would expand its political footprint by contesting 33 seats in Assam, marking a significant step outside its traditional stronghold in Jharkhand.

JMM’s move signals its intent to emerge as a broader regional player and tap into voter segments in Assam where it believes there is scope for growth. Party representatives said groundwork is already underway, with efforts focused on identifying candidates and building alliances where feasible.
Political analysts note that while the Election Commission’s transfers are not unusual, they often become flashpoints during elections, especially when opposition parties suspect bias. At the same time, JMM’s electoral push in Assam adds a new dimension to the contest, potentially influencing vote shares in select constituencies.
With the election schedule approaching, both administrative preparedness and political maneuvering are expected to intensify, setting the stage for a closely watched contest in the state.
