The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a cyclone alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is set to strengthen from September 24. The weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the archipelago, prompting local authorities to issue port warnings and safety advisories.
According to IMD officials, isolated areas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may experience thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph and lightning on September 24. Heavy rainfall, ranging from 7-11 cm, is likely in parts of Andaman Island on September 25 and 26, accompanied by similar windy conditions.
The rough weather is expected to persist, with squally conditions and wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, forecast for the Andaman Sea and coastal areas on September 27 and 28.

With sea conditions predicted to be turbulent, fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Andaman Sea until September 25. The local administration has urged boat owners, residents, and tourists to exercise caution, particularly during water-based recreational activities, due to the risk of surging waves.
In response to the IMD’s weather advisory, which also indicates the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has announced potential rescheduling of vessel sailings. Notably, the vessel Sindhu will skip Katchal Port during its scheduled trips to Campbell Bay via Nancowry and Katchal on September 23 and its return journey on September 25. Passengers and the public have been informed of these changes due to the prevailing inclement weather.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents and visitors to stay updated on weather alerts and prioritize safety during this period of heightened cyclonic activity.
