Senior Congress leader and former Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to Mamata Banerjee, urging the West Bengal government to introduce special administrative measures during the holy month of Ramzan and the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. In his letter, Chowdhury outlined a series of proposals aimed at ensuring smooth observance of the festival for the Muslim community across the state.
Highlighting the religious and social importance of Ramzan, he stated that the month symbolizes restraint, compassion and social harmony. He emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that daily necessities and religious practices are not disrupted during this sacred period. He described his demands as public-interest measures rather than special privileges.
Among his key proposals, Chowdhury called for special allocation of essential commodities such as rice, pulses, sugar, and dates at subsidised rates through ration shops. He also urged the formation of a dedicated task force to monitor markets and prevent abnormal price hikes of fruits and other essential items, which typically see increased demand during Ramzan.

The Congress leader further requested uninterrupted electricity supply during Iftar and Sehri hours, along with adequate and safe drinking water facilities, particularly during the early pre-dawn period. Stressing commuter convenience, he proposed additional train and state-run bus services at least two weeks before Eid to help people travel to their hometowns without difficulty.
Chowdhury also appealed to the state government to avoid scheduling major examinations during the Eid week, citing the challenges faced by students who travel long distances to celebrate with their families. Additionally, he demanded a minimum three-day government holiday for Eid, suggesting that a day before and after the festival be declared a holiday to strengthen family bonds and promote social harmony across West Bengal.
