Anupam Mittal, founder and CEO of People Group and Shaadi.com, has triggered a fresh conversation on social media after speaking out in support of Gen Z professionals who switch jobs frequently. Addressing long-standing criticism around job-hopping, Mittal urged people to “stop shaming” young workers and instead understand the intent behind their career choices.
In a recent LinkedIn post, Mittal compared early-career job changes to “dating” rather than “marriage”, arguing that frequent switches are often part of a healthy exploration process. He said many young professionals are still discovering which industries, roles, and workplace cultures align best with their skills and aspirations. According to him, this phase is less about disloyalty and more about developing clarity and self-awareness.
Sharing what he called the “right strategy”, Mittal advised young people between the ages of 21 and 24 to explore aggressively. He suggested that this period should be used to test different opportunities, learn quickly, and understand personal strengths and preferences. “Isn’t that exactly what the youth should be doing?” he asked, questioning career experts who criticise 22-year-olds for changing jobs annually.

Mittal also stressed that frequent switching should not continue indefinitely. He recommended that after the age of 25, professionals should aim to commit to a role or organisation for at least four years. This, he said, allows individuals to build depth, create impact, and gain meaningful long-term experience once they have identified the right fit.
His comments resonate with broader trends observed among Gen Z employees. Several surveys indicate that this generation places a strong emphasis on mental well-being, flexibility, and work-life balance. Unlike earlier generations, many Gen Z professionals prioritise personal fulfilment and sustainable careers over traditional measures of success, such as rapid promotions or long-term loyalty to a single employer.
