Amazon India has commenced layoffs affecting 800 to 1,000 corporate employees across its operations in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Gurugram. The reductions primarily target mid-to-senior-level positions in human resources, marketing, program management, and operational support functions, while preserving roles in logistics, fulfillment, and customer-facing retail operations.
The initiative aligns with Amazon’s global plan to remove approximately 14,000 managerial positions worldwide, representing about 4% of its corporate workforce. The restructuring, led by CEO Andy Jassy, aims to streamline organizational layers, enhance operational efficiency, and redirect resources toward strategic priorities including Amazon Web Services (AWS), artificial intelligence, and hardware development.
Affected employees in India will receive a severance package comprising 90 days of continued salary and benefits, extended health coverage for six months, and lump-sum payments equivalent to up to 12 months’ compensation, depending on tenure. Internal redeployment opportunities will also be offered to select individuals with expertise in high-demand areas such as cloud architecture and machine learning.

Despite the reductions, Amazon continues to expand technical hiring in India, with over 400 active internal postings for roles in generative AI, robotics, and satellite communications under Project Kuiper. The company maintains significant investments in local infrastructure, including data centers, content production for Prime Video, and last-mile delivery networks.
Industry observers note that the layoffs reflect a broader recalibration across global technology firms following rapid pandemic-era expansion. Demand for specialized talent in AI, cloud computing, and automation remains robust, with many affected professionals likely to transition to roles at startups, fintech firms, and competing multinationals.
The development underscores a structural shift in India’s technology employment landscape, where adaptability and proficiency in emerging technologies have become critical for career resilience. Amazon’s actions signal a strategic pivot toward a leaner, innovation-focused operating model designed for sustained competitiveness in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
