Leading artificial intelligence executives have called for the creation of a US-led international coalition to establish global rules and standards for AI development, as governments around the world increasingly focus on AI sovereignty and reducing reliance on foreign technology providers. The proposal was discussed during a closed-door meeting between technology leaders and heads of state at the G7 Summit.
According to reports, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis urged countries to strengthen international cooperation on artificial intelligence while allowing the United States to play a leading role in shaping governance frameworks. The executives argued that coordinated standards would help address the risks posed by rapidly advancing AI systems while encouraging responsible innovation.
The discussion took place during a working lunch attended by US President Donald Trump, G7 leaders and senior technology executives. The participants reportedly explored ways to balance technological progress with safety, security and regulatory oversight as AI continues to transform industries, economies and national security strategies across the world.

The proposal comes at a time when many countries are investing heavily in domestic AI capabilities to reduce dependence on foreign companies and secure greater control over critical technologies. Governments in Europe, Asia and North America have announced initiatives to support local AI research, infrastructure and talent development while introducing new regulations for advanced AI models.
Industry leaders believe that without internationally accepted standards, the AI ecosystem could become fragmented, with different countries adopting incompatible rules that slow innovation and complicate cross-border collaboration. A common framework, they argue, could promote transparency, interoperability and responsible deployment while addressing concerns related to misinformation, cybersecurity, privacy and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
As competition among global AI companies intensifies, calls for a coordinated governance model are gaining momentum. The discussions at the G7 Summit highlight the growing recognition that artificial intelligence is not only a technological issue but also a strategic policy challenge requiring cooperation between governments, industry and researchers to ensure the technology develops in a safe, secure and beneficial manner.
