A growing number of nutrition and digestive health discussions are highlighting a simple post-lunch habit: chewing a mix of fennel, carom, and cumin seeds to ease common issues such as bloating, acidity, and heaviness. According to gastroenterology experts, these traditional Indian kitchen seeds are being revisited for their potential role in supporting digestion, especially after heavy meals rich in fats or refined carbohydrates.
Speaking on the subject, Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj, explained in an interview with NDTV that the practice is rooted in both traditional knowledge and digestive physiology. He noted that chewing these seeds after meals can stimulate saliva production and activate digestive processes, which may help the body process food more efficiently.
Each of the three seeds plays a distinct role in digestive health. Fennel seeds are known for their carminative properties that may help reduce gas and bloating. Carom seeds are often associated with improved gastric enzyme secretion, which can support faster breakdown of food and reduce discomfort after heavy or oily meals. Cumin seeds are believed to stimulate digestive enzymes and may assist in improving nutrient absorption and reducing gut inflammation.

Experts suggest consuming the seeds in small quantities—typically around half a teaspoon in total—either raw or lightly roasted. They are usually chewed slowly about 5 to 10 minutes after finishing a meal so that their active compounds are released gradually in the mouth and digestive system.
However, specialists also caution against overuse. While these seeds may support digestion in mild cases of discomfort, individuals with chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as GERD or those on specific medications should seek medical advice before adopting the practice regularly. Moderation remains key, as excessive intake may not provide additional benefits and could lead to unwanted side effects.
