A Dutch travel influencer who has lived in India for nearly a decade has shared why she ultimately chose Bengaluru over Mumbai after becoming a mother, saying that a major life transition completely changed the way she experienced both cities. In a recent Instagram post, Ivana reflected on her move from Bengaluru to Mumbai, explaining that although living in Mumbai had long been a personal dream, the experience made her realise how deeply connected she had become to Bengaluru's slower pace and greener environment.
Ivana said she had expected Mumbai to offer an exciting new chapter after relocating from Bengaluru. However, she found herself longing to return to Bengaluru almost immediately. According to her, motherhood significantly altered her priorities, making her value stability, space and a calmer lifestyle over the fast-paced energy that had once attracted her to India's financial capital. She described Bengaluru as the place that had truly become her home, offering her a sense of comfort and security.
The move to Mumbai also coincided with a difficult period in her personal life. Ivana revealed that she experienced placenta bleeding and severe anaemia during her pregnancy, leaving her physically exhausted and unable to enjoy the city as she had imagined. She said the health complications, coupled with adjusting to a smaller apartment and being away from her established support system, made the transition emotionally challenging and left her feeling isolated.

Reflecting on the experience, she explained that the vibrant atmosphere of Mumbai, which had once appealed to her adventurous personality, became overwhelming during pregnancy. Rather than exploring the city or building a new social circle, she found herself focused on managing her health and preparing for motherhood. She added that she and her partner also had to complete their legal marriage formalities during the same period, making an already demanding phase of life even more intense.
Ivana admitted that she initially felt guilty for not enjoying a move she had dreamed about for years. She believed she should have been grateful after finally achieving that goal, but later realised that a city's suitability often depends on an individual's stage of life rather than the city's qualities alone. She said her experience taught her that a place can be wonderful without necessarily being the right fit for everyone at every point in life.
Her video has resonated with many social media users, sparking discussions about how significant life events can reshape personal preferences and lifestyle choices. Several viewers said her story highlighted an often-overlooked aspect of relocation, noting that factors such as parenthood, health and emotional well-being can influence how people experience a city far more than its reputation or popularity. The post has since become part of the ongoing online conversation comparing the lifestyles offered by India's major metropolitan cities.
