Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to follow medical advice and focus on regaining his health after he ended his 26-day hunger strike. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed concern over Wangchuk's condition and wished him a speedy recovery following his prolonged fast.
"I urge Sonam ji to follow the doctors' advice in his daily routine and regain his old weight as soon as possible. I pray to the Almighty for his good health," PM Modi said in his message. The statement came shortly after Wangchuk broke his hunger strike, which had continued since June 28, following assurances from the government regarding the protesters involved in the Jantar Mantar demonstration.
Wangchuk, a prominent educationist and environmental activist, ended his fast at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital after receiving assurances that no legal action would be taken against those who participated in the Jantar Mantar protest. His hunger strike had drawn attention to several issues raised by the protesters, including demands related to governance and protections for the Himalayan region.

The activist was admitted to the hospital for medical monitoring after the prolonged fast affected his health. Doctors advised him to take adequate rest, follow a proper recovery plan and gradually return to normal dietary and physical routines. Medical experts have previously warned that extended fasting can have significant effects on the body's metabolism, energy levels and overall health, requiring careful supervision during recovery.
Wangchuk's protest attracted widespread attention, with supporters highlighting concerns over environmental protection, local rights and sustainable development in the Himalayan region. His supporters had urged authorities to address the issues raised during the demonstration, while the government maintained that discussions on relevant matters would continue through appropriate channels.
With the hunger strike now concluded, attention has shifted towards the next steps in the dialogue between Wangchuk, other representatives and government authorities. Meanwhile, PM Modi's message focused on Wangchuk's immediate health, encouraging him to prioritise recovery after nearly four weeks of fasting. The activist's condition and future engagements are expected to remain closely watched as discussions on the issues raised during the protest continue.
