The annual Char Dham Yatra officially commenced on Monday with the ceremonial opening of the portals of Gangotri Temple and Yamunotri Temple, marking the start of one of Hinduism’s most significant pilgrimages.
Thousands of devotees gathered in the Himalayan region to witness the traditional rituals that accompany the opening of the temples after their winter closure. The shrines, dedicated to the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, are the first to open as part of the Char Dham circuit, which also includes Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Authorities have made extensive arrangements to manage the influx of pilgrims, including enhanced security, medical facilities, and improved infrastructure along the yatra route. Officials said special attention has been given to crowd management and safety, given the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions in the region.

The Uttarakhand government has also implemented registration systems and monitoring mechanisms to ensure a smooth pilgrimage season. Pilgrims have been advised to follow guidelines related to health, weather preparedness, and travel planning before undertaking the journey.
The Char Dham Yatra holds immense religious significance, with devotees believing that visiting the four sacred sites helps attain spiritual liberation. The opening of the portals is traditionally accompanied by Vedic chants, rituals, and a festive atmosphere, drawing participants from across India and abroad.
With the yatra now underway, authorities expect a steady rise in pilgrim numbers in the coming weeks. The successful conduct of the pilgrimage season will depend on coordinated efforts between local, security agencies, and temple committees to ensure both safety and accessibility for devotees.
