A nutritionist has broken down the basics of “seed cycling,” a dietary approach gaining popularity for its potential role in supporting women’s hormonal balance and menstrual health. The method involves consuming specific seeds during different phases of the menstrual cycle, with proponents claiming it may help regulate hormones naturally.
According to the expert, seed cycling typically begins on day one of the menstrual cycle — the first day of menstruation — and continues through day 15, which marks the follicular phase. During this period, individuals are advised to consume flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds daily. These seeds are believed to support estrogen production and provide essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and fiber.
From day 15 to the end of the cycle, known as the luteal phase, the focus shifts to sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. These are thought to help support progesterone levels, another key hormone involved in regulating the menstrual cycle. The combination of seeds is said to offer micronutrients like selenium and vitamin E, which may contribute to overall hormonal health.

While seed cycling has gained traction on social media and among wellness communities, experts note that scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness remains limited. Nutritionists emphasize that while seeds are nutrient-dense and can be a healthy addition to the diet, they should not be viewed as a standalone solution for hormonal imbalances or menstrual disorders.
Health professionals recommend a balanced diet, regular exercise, and medical consultation for individuals experiencing persistent hormonal issues. Seed cycling, they suggest, can be incorporated as part of a broader, holistic approach to nutrition rather than a primary treatment method.
As interest in natural health strategies continues to grow, seed cycling highlights the increasing focus on food-based approaches to wellness. However, experts caution that individuals should approach such trends with informed understanding and realistic expectations.
