As India faces intense summer heat in 2026, nutrition experts are highlighting the role of everyday foods in maintaining hydration and supporting gut health, warning that water alone may not be sufficient to cope with extreme temperatures.
According to gut health nutritionist Paridhi Garg, the body works harder during heatwaves to regulate temperature through sweating, which leads to a loss of not just fluids but also essential electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. She explained that hydration is not only about fluid intake but also about how effectively the body absorbs and retains those fluids, making diet a crucial factor in staying healthy during summer.
Among the most effective natural hydrators is coconut water, which helps replenish lost electrolytes and supports overall fluid balance. Similarly, cucumber, which is composed of nearly 96% water, provides sustained hydration along with essential minerals and fibre that aid digestion. These foods are commonly consumed in Indian households and offer a simple yet effective way to combat dehydration.

Curd-based drinks such as buttermilk, also known as lassi or chaas, are another staple recommended for summer. These beverages not only help restore salts lost through perspiration but also contain beneficial probiotics that support gut health. Spices like cumin and ginger, often added to chaas, further enhance digestion and cooling effects, making it a well-rounded option for hot weather.
Fruits like watermelon, which contain over 90% water, are also highlighted for their dual benefits of hydration and nutrition. Rich in antioxidants such as lycopene and compounds like citrulline, watermelon helps reduce heat-induced stress on the body while supporting healthy blood circulation, which plays a role in regulating body temperature.
Experts emphasise that incorporating such hydrating foods into daily meals can significantly improve the body’s ability to cope with heat stress. As temperatures continue to rise, a combination of adequate fluid intake and nutrient-rich, water-dense foods is being seen as essential to maintaining hydration, digestive health, and overall well-being during the summer months.
