During the monsoon season, increased humidity, sweat, and excess oil often make the skin feel sticky and uncomfortable. Many people respond by washing their face repeatedly throughout the day to remove the greasy feeling, but dermatologists warn that excessive cleansing may do more harm than good by weakening the skin’s natural protective barrier.
According to dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor, co-founder and director of The Esthetic Clinics, frequent face washing can disturb the delicate balance of natural oils and surface bacteria that help maintain healthy skin. She explained that washing the face more than twice a day, especially with strong foaming or sulphate-based cleansers, may strip away essential oils faster than the skin can restore them.
Over-cleansing can trigger a counterproductive reaction where the skin produces more oil to compensate for the loss of natural moisture. This can leave the face feeling even greasier despite repeated washing. Dermatologists also warn that overwashed skin may become more sensitive, leading to redness, tightness, irritation, and increased reactions to skincare products that were previously tolerated.

One of the clearest signs of over-cleansing is a “squeaky clean” feeling immediately after washing the face. Experts say this tight, dry sensation may indicate that the cleanser has removed not only sweat and excess oil but also the protective lipid layer that helps retain moisture and block irritants. A damaged skin barrier can result in dryness, sensitivity, and discomfort.
To maintain healthy skin during humid weather, dermatologists recommend cleansing the face twice daily with a gentle, pH-balanced, sulphate-free cleanser. After heavy sweating, rinsing with plain water instead of repeatedly using cleanser can help remove sweat without disturbing the skin barrier. Micellar water can also be used for quick refreshment after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity.
Along with proper cleansing, experts recommend continuing the use of sunscreen and a lightweight moisturiser during monsoon months. Although moisturiser may feel unnecessary when the skin appears oily, maintaining hydration is important for protecting the skin barrier. Avoiding excessive washing and following a balanced skincare routine can help prevent irritation while keeping the skin healthy during humid conditions.
