The vibrant festival of Holi, while celebrated with exuberant colours, can take a serious toll on hair, experts warn. Dermatologists note that synthetic powders and liquid dyes used today, often containing harsh chemicals and heavy metals, can cause dryness, brittleness, and breakage, with some even leading to hair fall. Dr. Priyanka Kuri, Consultant Dermatologist at Aster Whitefield Hospital, explained that modern Holi colours, unlike traditional plant-based powders, pose multiple risks to hair health.
One major concern is damage to the hair cuticle, the protective outer layer of hair strands. Coarse pigment particles can cling to or abrade the cuticle, leading to rough, brittle hair and split ends, particularly for those who frequently colour, style with heat, or chemically treat their hair. Liquid colours, often dissolved in alkaline solutions, exacerbate dryness by stripping natural oils, leaving hair stiff and prone to snapping. Dr. Kuri also emphasized that harsh scrubbing after celebrations, rather than the colours themselves, is a leading cause of post-Holi breakage.
To mitigate damage, Dr. Kuri recommends several preventative measures. Applying oil such as coconut or almond hair oil before stepping out can form a protective barrier, making it easier to wash off pigments. Slightly oily hair provides natural protection, so freshly washed hair should be avoided. Tying hair in a bun or braid or covering it with a scarf can limit exposure to chemical dyes.

Post-Holi care is equally important. A gentle rinse with plain water should precede shampooing, which should be done with sulphate-free formulas to avoid further stripping moisture. Deep-conditioning treatments or hair spas can help restore hydration, while avoiding heat styling or harsh scrubbing for a few days allows hair to recover. Whenever possible, using natural, plant-based colours remains the safest option.
Dr. Kuri highlighted that hair is composed of overlapping keratin layers, making it structurally delicate and vulnerable to both mechanical and chemical damage. With proper preparation and aftercare, much of the dryness and brittleness associated with Holi can be prevented. She concludes, “With simple preparation and gentle aftercare, your hair can remain healthy even amidst the celebrations.”
Following these precautions allows festival-goers to enjoy Holi without sacrificing hair health, proving that vibrant celebrations and hair care can go hand in hand.
