Elephant tusks worth an estimated ₹2 crore were stolen from the Pangode Military Camp, authorities said on Thursday. The theft has triggered a high-level investigation, with military and local police teams working to trace the stolen items.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tusks, part of a collection held at the camp, were taken under circumstances that remain unclear. Officials have cordoned off the area and begun forensic and security checks to determine how the theft occurred and to identify the perpetrators. Surveillance footage from the camp is being reviewed as part of the probe.
Local police and army officials are coordinating to track the movement of the tusks, which are considered highly valuable due to both their material worth and historical significance. Authorities are also liaising with wildlife and customs departments to prevent the tusks from being smuggled or sold illegally.

The theft has raised concerns about security protocols at military installations, prompting calls for stricter surveillance and inventory management. Experts said the incident highlights vulnerabilities in safeguarding valuable and sensitive items, even in secured facilities.
Officials have appealed to the public to provide any information that could help recover the tusks and warned that anyone attempting to trade or sell them would face severe legal consequences under both military and wildlife protection laws.
Investigators are expected to provide updates in the coming days as leads develop. Meanwhile, authorities have reassured that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the items are recovered and security is tightened to prevent similar incidents in the future.
