Hollywood actor Meryl Streep’s long-standing fitness routine has sparked renewed discussion among health experts about the benefits of low-impact exercise in older age, particularly compared to high-intensity gym workouts. The actress, now in her 70s, has reportedly maintained a habit of swimming long distances daily, a practice she has followed since her 60s to support both physical and mental well-being.
In earlier interviews, Meryl Streep shared that she aims to swim nearly a mile every day, completing around 55 laps in a pool. She has described swimming not just as exercise but also as a space for reflection and calm thinking. Her approach focuses on consistency rather than intensity, with health maintenance rather than appearance being the primary goal behind her routine.
Medical experts note that such low-impact aerobic activities can be particularly beneficial for ageing individuals. Cardiologist Dr Varun Bansal of Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi explains that exercises like swimming, walking, and cycling help strengthen the heart muscle, regulate blood pressure, and reduce cardiac risks without placing excessive strain on joints or arteries. He adds that water-based movement provides natural support to the body, making it safer for older adults.

According to Dr Bansal, low-impact swimming helps improve cardiovascular endurance and endothelial function, which supports healthy blood vessel activity. It also reduces the likelihood of injuries that are more common in high-intensity gym workouts, especially for people over 60 or 70. However, he cautions that sudden strenuous exercise without preparation may increase risks such as irregular heart rhythms, muscle strain, or cardiac stress in older adults.
In contrast, high-intensity gym training, while effective for building strength, may not always be suitable for seniors without close supervision. Heavy weights and sudden physical strain can place additional stress on the heart and joints, particularly in individuals who have been inactive for long periods. Experts emphasise that personalised fitness planning is essential to ensure safety and long-term benefits.
Health research, including findings referenced in medical literature such as Harvard Health reports, supports the idea that moderate and consistent exercise offers the greatest benefits for longevity and heart health. Studies suggest that regular low-to-moderate activity over time can be as effective as intense workouts in improving cardiovascular outcomes in older adults. Streep’s routine is often cited as an example of how steady, low-impact exercise can support healthy ageing.
