Actor‑turned‑politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), abruptly cancelled a high‑profile outreach event in Chennai on Tuesday, citing seriously inadequate security arrangements by local authorities. The sudden pullback has sparked political controversy just weeks ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled for April 23.

The planned event — part of Vijay’s ongoing campaign efforts in Tamil Nadu’s capital — was intended to bring the TVK chief closer to voters and spotlight his party’s election manifesto. However, according to a statement from TVK, insufficient police deployment resulted in severe traffic congestion and poor crowd control, leaving the star’s convoy stranded for extended periods and raising safety concerns for attendees.

TVK joint secretary Nirmal Kumar formally appealed to the Election Commission of India for immediate intervention, urging action against the Chennai Police Commissioner and other officials over the alleged security lapses that forced the cancellation. The party has accused the state administration, led by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), of deliberately undermining its campaign efforts through poor logistical support.
