Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ is redefining what’s possible for horror at the box office. In its second weekend, the film pulled in $45 million across the U.S. and Canada, dropping just 6% from its Easter debut — the smallest second-week decline for any genre since Avatar in 2009. Globally, ‘Sinners’ has now grossed an impressive $161.6 million.
The film’s success shows it has transcended horror fandom to capture mainstream audiences. While men made up 56% of the opening weekend crowd, the audience balanced out to 50/50 in week two. Premium formats, particularly IMAX, have been a major draw, accounting for 21% of global ticket sales — a notable 9% increase over the first weekend.
Starring Michael B. Jordan as twins, ‘Sinners’ has been praised for its bold blend of horror, drama, action, and musical elements within a Southern Gothic setting. Produced by Coogler’s Proximity Media and released by Warner Bros., it’s the studio’s second major win this month after A Minecraft Movie energized the box office.

Industry analysts are hailing Sinners’ hold as historic. “You can buy a great opening with marketing, but the second weekend proves if a film has real staying power," said Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. "This is an absolute phenomenon."
Meanwhile, ‘The Accountant 2’ opened in third place with $24.5 million, edged out by a 20th-anniversary re-release of ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’, which earned $25.2 million. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ and ‘Until Dawn’ rounded out the top five.
Thanks to ‘Sinners’ and ‘Minecraft’, April’s box office is up 102% from last year, setting an optimistic stage for the summer movie season, which kicks off May 2 with Disney’s ‘Thunderbolts’.
