‘Kesari Chapter 2’, starring Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday, wrapped up its opening weekend with a respectable Rs 29.75 crore at the domestic box office. The historical courtroom drama, which released on Friday, gained momentum over the weekend thanks to strong word of mouth and positive reviews.
According to early estimates from Sacnilk.com, the film collected Rs 7.75 crore on its opening day. Collections improved on Saturday, with the film earning Rs 9.75 crore, and peaked on Sunday with Rs 12.25 crore. While the numbers are solid, they fall short when compared to Akshay Kumar’s previous release, Sky Force, which had a more robust opening weekend tally of Rs 61.75 crore.
Directed by debutant Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 is based on the book The Case That Shook the Empire by Raghu and Pushpa Palat. The film recounts the legal battle led by lawyer C Sankaran Nair in the aftermath of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Akshay Kumar plays the lead role of Nair, who challenges the British Raj to expose the truth behind the massacre.
