Actor Rajpal Yadav has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in each of seven cheque bounce cases linked to a financial dispute involving nearly Rs 9 crore. The Delhi High Court, while pronouncing its order, directed the actor to pay outstanding amounts to the complainant and clarified that the payments already made by him would be adjusted against the final liability.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court ordered Yadav to pay Rs 1.05 crore in each of the seven cases to the complainant. The court also directed an additional payment of Rs 1,04,75,000 to the complainant and Rs 25,000 to the State. Yadav’s wife, Radha Yadav, was also directed to pay Rs 5,51,380 in each case as part of the court’s directions.
The court noted that the amount already deposited by the actor, reported to be around Rs 2.25 crore, would be adjusted against the total amount payable. The order came after prolonged proceedings and unsuccessful settlement attempts between the actor and the complainant company. The dispute originated from dishonoured cheques issued in connection with a financial obligation that later grew into a legal battle.

Before delivering the verdict, the High Court had attempted to encourage an out-of-court settlement between the parties. During the hearings, the complainant agreed to accept Rs 6 crore as a full and final settlement following the court’s suggestion. However, Yadav, who appeared virtually during the proceedings, declined the proposal and said he had already suffered significant financial losses, including the sale of property and payment of substantial amounts.
The complainant’s counsel, advocate Avneet Singh Sikka, argued that Yadav had already accepted his conviction and could not avoid the financial responsibility arising from the dishonoured cheques. He also pointed out that the revision petition filed by the actor in 2024 involved a delay of 1,894 days and lacked sufficient explanation for seeking condonation of the delay.
The financial dispute dates back to the failure of Yadav’s 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, which marked his directorial debut and resulted in financial difficulties. According to court proceedings, the unpaid dues eventually increased to around Rs 9 crore across seven cases. Yadav’s lawyer had earlier informed the court that the actor had paid around Rs 2.5 crore towards the outstanding amount, while the court continued proceedings to determine the remaining liability.
