Comedian and actor Kiku Sharda has offered a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of The Kapil Sharma Show, revealing that the popular comedy programme follows a script for approximately 70% of its content, while the remaining 30% is driven by spontaneous improvisation. Speaking during an interview with podcaster Prakhar Gupta, Kiku explained that although the show is carefully planned, performers frequently adapt to unexpected moments and audience interactions to keep conversations natural and entertaining.
Discussing the show's format, Kiku said the production team intentionally avoids revealing jokes, punchlines and character details to celebrity guests before filming. According to him, this approach helps capture authentic reactions on camera rather than rehearsed responses. He noted that while a broad script is prepared for every episode, conversations often take unexpected turns depending on how guests respond, prompting the cast to improvise during the recording.
Kiku estimated that around 70% of the show follows the planned script, with the remaining 30% evolving naturally during filming. He explained that celebrities sometimes steer discussions in entirely new directions, while comedians often come up with fresh jokes in the moment. This balance between preparation and improvisation, he said, allows the show to maintain its structure while preserving the spontaneity that audiences enjoy.

Recalling one of his memorable experiences on the show, Kiku spoke about actor Salman Khan, describing him as one of the most unpredictable celebrity guests. He said carefully prepared jokes do not always receive the expected reaction, whereas an unplanned comment made during the conversation can suddenly leave Salman laughing uncontrollably. According to Kiku, once Salman starts laughing genuinely, he finds it difficult to stop, often becoming emotional with tears in his eyes.
Kiku also praised host Kapil Sharma for his ability to manage situations when a joke fails to connect with the audience or a guest. He described Kapil as someone with exceptional instincts who immediately recognises when a segment is not working and smoothly shifts the conversation in a different direction. Rather than allowing awkward moments to continue, Kapil often introduces an improvised remark or humorous observation that naturally moves the performance forward.
Reflecting on their long professional association, Kiku said working alongside Kapil Sharma for more than 13 years has created a strong understanding between them. He explained that both comedians have developed an instinctive sense of each other's timing and thought process, enabling them to adapt seamlessly during live recordings. According to Kiku, this chemistry, combined with a balance of scripted content and improvisation, has played a significant role in the enduring popularity of The Kapil Sharma Show.
