Veteran Tamil and Telugu actress Bindu Ghosh, known for her impeccable comic timing and dancing prowess, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, after a prolonged illness and financial troubles. She was 76. Despite a career spanning decades, she passed away in relative obscurity, a stark reminder of cinema’s fleeting spotlight.
Reports said Bindu was undergoing treatment at a Chennai hospital, where she breathed her last. She is survived by her two sons.
Bindu Ghosh’s journey began in 1960 when she appeared alongside a young Kamal Haasan in ‘Kalathur Kannamma’ as a dancer. Over the years, she contributed both on-screen and behind the scenes as a choreographer, even performing in dance sequences featuring Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Ministers, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.
Her acting career took off in 1982 with ‘Kozhi Koovuthu’, where she carved a niche in Tamil cinema’s male-dominated comedy landscape. Holding her own against stalwarts like Goundamani, Senthil, and Manorama, she broke barriers at a time when humour was largely driven by men.
Bindu Ghosh shared the screen with some of Tamil cinema’s greatest names, including Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth, and Karthik, during their early years. A regular in director Visu’s films, she delivered memorable performances in Dowry Kalyanam and Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi.
Though often subjected to comedic tropes centreed around her weight, Bindu Ghosh refused to be reduced to stereotypes. With her distinctive voice, expressive body language, and fearless spirit, she became a rare female force in Tamil cinema’s golden age of comedy.
Tributes have begun pouring in for the veteran actress, whose passing highlights the industry’s ephemeral nature. Her contributions to cinema may have faded from public memory, but her impact remains undeniable.
