Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and Actor Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi on Monday, January 12, 2026, for nearly six hours of questioning in connection with the deadly stampede at a party rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27, 2025, which claimed 41 lives.
Emerging from the CBI office, Vijay, through party sources, strongly denied any responsibility on the part of TVK for the tragedy. He asserted that he left the venue promptly to prevent further loss of life amid the escalating chaos. Sources quoted Vijay as stating, “TVK is not responsible. He left the venue (Karur) to avoid further tragedy.”
The CBI did not confront Vijay with any other witnesses during the session. Officials confirmed that his questioning remains incomplete and that he will be summoned again after the Pongal festival. Vijay reportedly requested an adjournment citing the festival, and the agency has agreed not to call him on Tuesday.

The Karur stampede remains one of the deadliest crowd disasters in Tamil Nadu’s recent political history. At the time of the incident, the Tamil Nadu Police had attributed the tragedy to Vijay’s alleged inordinate delay in reaching the venue, which led to a prolonged wait and an uncontrollable surge among the massive gathering.
The CBI’s investigation is ongoing, with Vijay’s statements set to be cross-verified against police accounts and other evidence. The case continues to draw significant attention, given the scale of the loss and the political implications surrounding the rally organized by TVK, Vijay’s newly formed party. Further developments are expected following the Pongal break.
