What was meant to be a meticulously choreographed action shoot turned tragic on July 13 when veteran stunt artist S M Raju (real name Mohan Raj) collapsed while performing a high-speed stunt for Pa Ranjith’s upcoming film Vettuvam in Nagapattinam.
The 52-year-old was behind the wheel of an SUV during a crash sequence when he suddenly slumped over. Crew members rushed to pull him from the vehicle and took him to a nearby hospital, but he was declared brought dead on arrival.
Director Pa Ranjith, heartbroken by the loss, posted a moving tribute on X, remembering Raju as a “husband, father, an incredible stunt artist and a graceful human being.”

“A day that began with prayers, planning, and safety protocols ended in the shocking, heartbreaking loss of a man we deeply respected,” Ranjith wrote. “Mohan Raj Anna was the backbone of our stunt team – his expertise, clarity, and commitment were unmatched.”
Ranjith emphasized that all precautions were followed under the guidance of stunt director Dilip Subbarayan, making Raju’s sudden death even more devastating.
“He wanted to be remembered for his work as a fabulous stunt artist, and that’s how he will forever live in our memories,” the Thangalaan director said, mourning the loss felt by Raju’s wife, children, colleagues, and the entire film crew.

As tributes pour in from across the industry, Raju’s final performance stands as a sobering reminder of the unseen dangers faced by stunt professionals — heroes behind the scenes whose risks are all too real.
