Tamil film Selvi received a strong response at its world premiere at the 31st Busan International Film Festival on October 9, with a packed theatre attending the screening. The film has continued to attract audiences, with subsequent screenings also selling out. The reception marks an encouraging start to its international festival journey and brings attention to an Indian production exploring the lives of migrant care workers.
Produced by National Award-winning actor Anjali Patil, who also plays the lead role, Selvi marks the directorial debut of Sailesh Rathnakumar. The film is one of only two Indian productions selected for the festival’s Vision – Asia section, which showcases Asian cinema. Patil attended the premiere and expressed gratitude for the response from Korean audiences, describing the opportunity to present the film at an international platform as a significant experience for her as both an actor and producer.
The story centres on Selvi, a migrant home-care nurse who works in the homes of wealthy families. Her demanding shifts can last between 12 and 72 hours, leaving her with little control over her time and personal life. The narrative explores migration, friendship and caregiving before an incident from her past shifts the story towards questions of survival and the difficult decisions people make to protect themselves.

Director Rathnakumar said the experience of presenting his debut feature at Busan felt overwhelming and that the audience response had strengthened his motivation as a filmmaker. He expressed hope that the film would connect with viewers beyond its immediate setting and contribute to bringing Indian stories to a wider international audience. The festival screening represents an important early milestone for the director as he begins his feature-film career.
The film also brings together an experienced technical team. Editing has been handled by nine-time National Award winner A. Sreekar Prasad, while sound design is by National Award-winning sound designer Anand Krishnamoorthi, recognised for his work on Ponniyin Selvan: Part I. Actors Swathy Krishnan, Vinoth Kishan and Archana Padmini are also part of the principal cast.
Selvi is co-produced by the Red Sea Fund, an initiative of the Red Sea International Film Festival, and has received support from Hong Kong Asia Film Financing. Following its premiere in South Korea, the film is scheduled to have its second international screening at the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival. Its sold-out screenings at Busan have given the production an encouraging reception as it continues its journey across international cinema events.
