Film Federation of India President RK Selvamani has strongly criticised the alleged leak of actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, comparing the incident to a “₹500 crore bank heist” and calling for urgent reforms in the industry’s content security systems.
Selvamani’s remarks come amid reports that portions of the film were leaked online, triggering concern within the Tamil film industry over intellectual property protection and digital piracy. He argued that large-scale leaks of big-budget films are not isolated incidents but symptoms of a deeper structural weakness in how film content is secured during production and post-production stages.
Drawing a sharp analogy, he described the situation as being equivalent to a massive financial breach, stating that the loss caused by piracy in high-budget cinema is comparable to a large-scale theft from a banking system. He stressed that such incidents not only cause financial damage but also undermine the creative and logistical efforts of hundreds of technicians and artists involved in filmmaking.

Selvamani also pointed to what he described as systemic flaws in the current framework, suggesting that existing safeguards are inadequate to deal with modern digital threats. He called for stronger enforcement mechanisms, improved cyber security protocols, and greater coordination between production houses, regulatory bodies, and law enforcement agencies to prevent future leaks.
The controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan has reignited long-standing concerns in the Indian film industry over piracy, particularly as digital distribution channels have expanded. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly flagged the need for stricter monitoring of content during editing, dubbing, and pre-release stages, where leaks are most likely to occur.
As discussions continue, the incident has added pressure on producers and industry bodies to reassess current security practices. Selvamani’s strong remarks reflect growing frustration within the industry over repeated breaches, with calls now intensifying for a more robust, technology-driven system to protect high-value cinematic content before its official release.
