Tamil cinema star Nayanthara has announced her decision to renounce the title ‘Lady Superstar,’ emphasizing that accolades, while valuable, can sometimes distance actors from their craft.
In a heartfelt statement on X on Tuesday, the actor—known for films like Sri Rama Rajyam, Chandramukhi, Ghajini, and Jawan—expressed gratitude to fans but requested to be addressed simply by her name.
"Many of you have graciously referred to me as ‘Lady Superstar,’ a title born out of your immense affection. I owe you all a lot for crowning me with such a valuable title. However, I humbly request you all to call me ‘Nayanthara’," she wrote.
The 40-year-old actor explained that while she treasures the love behind the title, she feels her name represents her best—both as an artist and an individual. “Titles and accolades are priceless, but they can sometimes create an image that separates us from our work, our craft, and the unconditional bond we share with you, the audience.”
With this move, Nayanthara follows other South Indian stars like Kamal Haasan, Ajith, and Jayam Ravi, who have also relinquished honorifics given by fans.
Born Diana Mariam Kurian, she was given the name ‘Nayanthara’ by director Sathyan Anthikad for her debut film, Manassinakkare (2003).
She reassured fans that while the future is unpredictable, their unwavering support remains a constant. “Cinema unites us, and let’s keep celebrating it together,” she wrote, signing off with “With love, respect, and gratitude, Nayanthara.”
The actor, who has several upcoming films, including Mahesh Narayanan’s project with Mohanlal and Mammootty, Rakkayie, and Mookuthi Amman 2, ended her post with: “NAYANTHARA will always be and only NAYANTHARA.”
