Rajinikanth’s next big project, Thalaivar 173, produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, has seen a major shake-up following the sudden exit of director Sundar C. The film, which marks the long-awaited collaboration between the two Tamil cinema icons after nearly five decades, is now reportedly being discussed with actor-filmmaker Dhanush as a possible replacement to direct the project.
According to a report by Sacnilk, Dhanush is currently in talks with the production house to take the director’s chair for Thalaivar 173. If confirmed, it would mark the actor’s first directorial collaboration with Rajinikanth and one of the most significant projects of his career. However, neither Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, nor the production team has issued an official statement, leaving fans eagerly awaiting confirmation.
Sundar C, who had initially been announced as director, stepped down citing “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.” He released a statement expressing his deep respect for both legends, saying, “There are moments when we must follow the path laid out for us, even if it diverges from our dreams. My association with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan goes back a long way, and I will always hold them in the highest regard.” The filmmaker had previously worked with Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997) and Kamal Haasan in Anbe Sivam (2003).

Addressing Sundar C’s exit, Kamal Haasan told reporters that his focus remains on ensuring the film’s creative integrity aligns with the superstar’s expectations. “It is my responsibility as the producer to make sure the script does justice to my star. Until that happens, we will continue scouting for the right creative direction,” Haasan said, hinting that a younger filmmaker might come onboard. “Expect the unexpected,” he added, teasing a bold approach for Thalaivar 173.
The project is a milestone in Tamil cinema as it brings together Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth after 46 years, rekindling the star power that defined an era. Confirmation of Dhanush’s involvement could further amplify audience anticipation, given his track record as a director with critically acclaimed films like Pa Paandi. Fans will be watching closely as Thalaivar 173 moves toward final scripting and direction decisions ahead of an official production announcement.
