The Congress party has reportedly initiated outreach to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the party’s strong electoral debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, according to sources familiar with the developments. The move comes amid a surprising shift in the state’s political landscape, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.
According to the latest available figures cited in political discussions, the TVK has emerged as a significant force with 105 seats, followed by the ruling DMK at 71 seats, while the AIADMK trails at 57 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The performance marks a major disruption in the long-standing two-party dominance that has defined Tamil Nadu politics for decades.
Sources said that discussions within the Congress camp have begun on the possibility of forming an alliance with TVK. If the two parties decide to collaborate, their combined strength could cross the halfway mark of 118 seats required to form a government in the state assembly. Congress leader K.C. Venugopal acknowledged that the results had come as a “surprise” and said the party would take a quick decision on its Tamil Nadu strategy.

Venugopal also reportedly praised Vijay’s political entry, stating that the Congress “should appreciate” the actor-turned-politician’s performance in his debut election. However, he added that the party would need to carefully analyse the outcome before finalising any alliance decisions. Internal discussions are expected to focus on whether early cooperation with TVK could strengthen Congress’s long-term position in the state.
The TVK’s performance has drawn significant political attention, with observers calling it a “breakthrough debut” for a new party in a highly competitive political environment. Analysts note that Tamil Nadu politics has historically been dominated by either the DMK or AIADMK since 1967, making TVK’s emergence as a major contender a rare development in the state’s electoral history.
Political commentators also pointed out that no party in Tamil Nadu has managed to reach such influence within a short period since its formation. While former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran also achieved success after breaking away from the DMK, his political journey involved years of organisational experience. Against this backdrop, TVK’s rapid rise has triggered discussions about a possible realignment of political forces in the state.
