Ajith Kumar’s much-anticipated action drama ‘Good Bad Ugly’ stormed the box office on its opening day, earning an impressive Rs 28.5 crore and claiming the title of 2025’s biggest Tamil opener so far. The film reunites Ajith with Trisha Krishnan after their recent collaboration in ‘Vidaamuyarchi’, and has also emerged as one of the highest openers of the star’s career.
Directed by Adhik Ravichandran, ‘Good Bad Ugly’ released on April 10 to much fanfare. In Tamil Nadu, fans celebrated its arrival with dancing, fireworks, and houseful theatres. Ajith’s wife, Shalini, was also spotted attending a special screening with their children, adding to the celebratory mood.
The film has managed to outpace Ajith’s last release ‘Vidaamuyarchi’, which opened with Rs 26 crore in Tamil Nadu. While ‘Vidaamuyarchi’ eventually underperformed despite its strong debut, ending its theatrical run at around ₹95 crore, hopes are high that ‘Good Bad Ugly’ will sustain its momentum and cross into blockbuster territory.
On Day 1, ‘Good Bad Ugly’ recorded an average occupancy of 79.47%, with night shows peaking at 88.81%. Chennai emerged as the top-performing city, boasting 95% occupancy and hosting 924 shows—the highest in the country—followed by Bengaluru with 616 screenings. The Telugu-dubbed version of the film reported a lower but notable 16.98% occupancy.
The story follows a retired gangster forced to confront his violent past after his son is kidnapped, and features Arjun Das as the antagonist. The ensemble cast includes Jackie Shroff, Prabhu, Naslen, Prasanna, Raghu Ram, Sunil, Redin Kingsley, Priya Prakash Varrier, Yogi Babu, Shine Tom Chacko, and a cameo by Simran, Ajith’s co-star from ‘Aval Varuvala’.
Fans have praised the film for its action sequences, emotional beats, and numerous callbacks to Ajith’s storied career. Many hailed it as one of his finest performances in recent years, setting the stage for a strong weekend ahead at the box office.
