Saif Ali Khan has described his decision to act in the 2012 romantic comedy Cocktail as an “inevitable mistake”, admitting that the film’s script had regressive elements despite its commercial success and breezy presentation. The actor, who also co-produced the film, reflected on the project in a recent interaction and said his decision to play Gautam was driven more by the need to get the production underway than by any strong connection with the character.

Cocktail, which also starred Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty, was widely appreciated upon release for its stylish treatment, contemporary setting and memorable performances. However, over the years, the film has faced criticism for portraying a modern, independent woman in a way that ultimately appeared conventional and regressive. Saif acknowledged that he was aware of these flaws but proceeded with the role because he was involved in producing the project and wanted to ensure that the film was completed.

Speaking about his experience, Saif said that playing Gautam was not primarily motivated by the character itself. He explained that he took up the role because the film was being produced by him and needed to move forward. He admitted that it was “100 percent” a mistake and called it “a slightly regressive script choice”, while maintaining that the film otherwise remained a light, entertaining and enjoyable watch. According to him, the more exciting character in the film was clearly Veronica, played by Deepika Padukone.

Saif also pointed out that professional decisions in the film industry are not always based solely on the strength of an individual role. Actors and producers often make choices for practical reasons, including financing, production commitments and the need to bring a project to completion. In Cocktail’s case, he said his involvement as a producer influenced his decision to act in the film, even though he understood that the script offered a more substantial and interesting part to Deepika’s character.

Deepika Padukone has previously described Veronica as one of the most special characters she has played in her career. Reflecting on the role, she said the character became a major professional and personal turning point for her because audiences connected strongly with Veronica’s emotional struggles, confidence and vulnerability. She also noted that the character remained significant to her because it changed how viewers perceived her as an actor and helped establish her ability to portray complex, unconventional personalities.

Written by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail was produced by Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan under Illuminati Films and Maddock Films. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews when it was released but performed well commercially. While its music, performances and urban atmosphere helped make it popular, later discussions have increasingly focused on the treatment of its female characters and the contrast between the film’s modern surface and its traditional emotional resolution.
