Veteran Malayalam Film Director Kamal has described the recent sentencing in the high-profile 2017 actress assault case as "very disappointing," stating that many expected a harsher punishment for the convicts. On December 12, 2025, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court sentenced six men, including prime accused Pulsar Suni, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each for offenses including gang rape and criminal conspiracy. Speaking to reporters, Kamal emphasized that a minimum of life imprisonment had been anticipated, adding that he does not believe actor Dileep, previously accused in the case, was involved.
The case stems from the February 17, 2017, abduction and sexual assault of a prominent South Indian Actress while she was traveling by car from Thrissur to Kochi. A group of men allegedly forced their way into her vehicle, held her captive, and assaulted her while recording the act. The Ernakulam court, presided over by Judge Honey M Varghese, convicted the six direct perpetrators but earlier acquitted Dileep and three others on December 8, finding insufficient evidence of a broader conspiracy involving him.
Each convict was also fined Rs 50,000, with an additional one-year imprisonment in case of non-payment, and sentences are to run concurrently. Pulsar Suni received an extra five-year term under the IT Act for related offenses. The court ordered safe custody of evidence, including a pen drive with visual recordings. The verdict has drawn criticism for not imposing the maximum penalty, prompting calls for review.

Kerala Cultural Minister Saji Cheriyan stated that the government would thoroughly examine the judgment and take necessary steps, noting expectations for maximum punishment were unmet. While acknowledging the judicial process, Cheriyan stressed pursuing full justice, including clarity on any conspiracy elements. The case, which shook the Malayalam film industry and sparked broader discussions on women's safety, continues to evoke strong reactions as appeals are anticipated.
