On July 13, 2025, the vibrant modeling world of Puducherry was struck by tragedy as San Rechal, a 26-year-old model and former Miss Puducherry 2022, died by suicide. Known for her fierce advocacy against colorism in Indian cinema and fashion, Rechal reportedly consumed a large quantity of tablets, believed to be sleeping pills, during a visit to her father’s home in Karamanikuppam.

Police sources indicate that Rechal was grappling with severe financial distress, having sold or pledged her jewelry to sustain her career. She had sought financial assistance from her father, who was unable to provide support due to other family obligations. Despite initial treatment at a government hospital and a private facility, she was transferred to JIPMER, where she passed away.

A suicide note found at the scene stated that no one should be held responsible for her death. However, authorities are probing potential marital issues, given her recent marriage, with a Tahsildar-level inquiry underway to explore all contributing factors. Rechal’s bold voice against the fair-skin bias in the entertainment industry had made her a beacon of change, using her platform to champion inclusivity and representation for darker-skinned individuals.
