The prosecution in the Renukaswamy murder case has accused Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavitra Gowda, and five other defendants of deliberately delaying the trial through repeated discharge petitions and procedural applications, despite a Supreme Court directive for expeditious proceedings. In a memo filed before the trial court, Special Public Prosecutor P Prasanna Kumar highlighted that the apex court’s August 14 order revoked bail for all seven accused and mandated a swift trial, leading to their immediate custody. However, nearly 20 hearings later, arguments on framing charges remain stalled.
Kumar argued that the defence’s tactics—including Darshan’s separate application under the Karnataka Prisoners Act for special jail facilities—aim to obstruct justice. Despite prison authorities confirming compliance with the Karnataka Prison Manual, 2021, Darshan filed additional pleas, including one for a court inspection of the jail and another alleging contempt by officials. The District Legal Services Authority’s October 17 report, following a court-ordered visit, dismissed Darshan’s claims as baseless, affirming all entitled facilities were provided.
The prosecution urged the court to reject further delay tactics and proceed with charge framing to honour the Supreme Court’s priority directive. The case stems from the alleged abduction and murder of Renukaswamy, with Darshan and Gowda named as primary accused. The trial’s prolonged pre-charge phase has raised concerns over judicial efficiency in high-profile cases.

As public and legal scrutiny intensifies, the court is expected to rule soon on the discharge applications. The prosecution remains firm that a substantive trial must begin without further obstruction, ensuring accountability in one of Karnataka’s most closely watched criminal cases.
