On July 4, 2025, a Bengaluru court issued a forceful ex-parte interim injunction against actor-politician Kamal Haasan, prohibiting him from making derogatory remarks against the Kannada language, literature, culture, or land.
The order, delivered by an Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge, also bars Haasan from claiming linguistic superiority over Kannada, following a provocative statement that ignited outrage among Kannada cultural groups.
The suit, filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) under president Mahesh Joshi, was triggered by Haasan’s claim during a promotional event for his film Thug Life that "Kannada was born out of Tamil." This remark sparked widespread backlash from pro-Kannada organizations, who deemed it an affront to Kannada heritage.
