In the final years of his life, Marvel legend Stan Lee was constantly in the public eye, attending comic conventions and movie premieres, all while tirelessly signing autographs for fans. But behind the scenes, his world was far less glamorous. A new documentary, ‘Stan Lee: The Final Chapter’, aims to uncover the darker truth of his final years—alleged mistreatment, financial struggles, and betrayal by those closest to him.
Filmmaker Jon Bolerjack, who first met Lee a decade ago, spent years capturing candid moments at Lee’s Hollywood Hills home and on the road. Initially, Bolerjack pitched a reality show featuring Lee, but as he became part of the creator’s inner circle, he began documenting troubling signs of elder abuse and financial mismanagement. Now, after pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the project, he has launched a Kickstarter campaign to complete the film.
The documentary follows previous reports, including a 2018 ‘Hollywood Reporter’ investigation, which exposed a power struggle over Lee’s estate. Bolerjack contends the situation was even worse than publicly known, with Lee in financial ruin by the time of his death in November 2018 at 95.
The trailer offers an unfiltered glimpse into Lee’s declining health and exhaustion, contrasting sharply with his usual upbeat persona. While the film does not explicitly name all involved, it highlights figures like Max Anderson, Lee’s former road manager, who was previously scrutinised for his role in Lee’s affairs.
Bolerjack insists Lee wanted his struggles known, seeing his story as a warning. ‘Stan Lee: The Final Chapter’ serves as both a tribute to the pop culture icon and a cautionary tale about the perils of fame and unchecked power.
