‘Game of Thrones’ fans have reason to celebrate once again, as HBO has officially announced the release of a new prequel series, ‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’. Set to drop in late 2025, the series marks yet another expansion of the Westeros universe, following the success of ‘House of the Dragon’.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ novella series, ‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’ is set 100 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. The story follows the adventures of a young, courageous knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his diminutive squire, Egg (Aegon Targaryen). The series takes place during a time when the Targaryen line still rules the Iron Throne, with the memory of the last dragon still fresh. As the duo navigates the political intrigues and dangers of Westeros, they encounter powerful foes and forge an unlikely friendship.
George R.R. Martin, speaking to Collider, described the show as “a little softer” and “more humorous” compared to the darker tone of ‘Game of Thrones’. He expressed hope that fans would embrace this change of pace.
The cast features Irish actor Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, with Finn Bennett portraying Egg’s older brother, Prince Aerion Targaryen. The ensemble also includes Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.
Production for the six-episode series began in June 2024 and wrapped up in September. While an exact release date remains unconfirmed, ‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’ will be available to stream on HBO Max. In the meantime, fans can revisit ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ on the platform.
